Joel Albarella is senior vice president and head of New York Life Ventures, the corporate venture capital arm of New York Life tasked with accelerating the pace of innovation at the company. Joel founded and has run New York Life Ventures since its inception in 2012. He is responsible for directing all activities of the group, including the sourcing and management of strategic venture capital investments and the implementation of technology testing and partnerships to boost New York Life’s existing businesses.
New York Life Ventures has produced top quartile investment returns since inception and continues to add new solutions and capabilities across the company’s business operations, enhancing speed to insight, profit and digital competitiveness. In addition, NYLV houses Innovation Services, a team dedicated to creating the conditions for testing across New York Life using Human-Centered Design principles and techniques.
Prior to founding New York Life Ventures, Joel served as New York Life’s director of strategy and mergers & acquisitions and as the chief of staff to the company’s chief investment officer and to the chief executive officer of the company’s asset management business. Before joining New York Life, Joel worked at Deutsche Asset Management and Hewitt Associates in the company’s pension technology group.
Joel earned a Masters in Business Administration from Columbia University and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Rutgers University. He is a member of the Eagle Academy Foundation’s Board of Directors.
